Made in Japan
This statue depicts Shoki, a traditional heroic figure known for his role as a protector of homes against illnesses and demons. It is said that he appeared in an imperial dream to defeat a demon responsible for an illness. Since then, his image has been used in Japan to ward off evil spirits, particularly in Kyoto, where it very often adorns the roofs of traditional houses (Kyō-machiya).
Made in a Japanese handicraft workshop, probably in Kyoto, this piece employs ancestral techniques for crafting tiles kawara used in local architecture. The dark, slightly silvery texture accentuates the expressive details of his face and attire.
This handcrafted piece fits equally well into a contemporary or traditional interior. It can traditionally be placed outdoors, attached above the front door, but can also be installed indoors, near the front door, or as decoration on a piece of furniture.
This traditional statue is a symbol of protection and courage, ideal for Japanese handicraft enthusiasts.
