Japanese Chopsticks

Chopsticks are called 'Hashi' or 'Otemoto' in Japan. They are traditionally in lacquered wood but disposable wood version and plastic ones are also available.
It is common for a couple to have the same model of chopsticks with the woman's one a bit shorter.
These quality made products respect traditional colors and shapes and are both beautiful and classical, very resistant and perfectly hygienic.
They should not be washed in dishwasher.

How to use chopsticks?

This video is a good tutorial about how to use them. Most important advices are:
- the basic position is the same as the one when holding a pen
- only the upper chopstick should move
- only forefinger and middle finger should move
- do not push your upper chopstick with too much pressure.

Is there any chopsticks etiquette in Japan?

Yes, there are a lot! However not all of them are strictly followed.
Here are the most common of them:
- do not leave them sticking in rice (done only for funeral purpose)
- do not leave them crossed on the table or plate (for similar reasons)
- do not use only one chopstick
- do not pass food directly from your chopsticks to someone else's
- do not lick them
- do not point at people or things with them

What are the differences between Japanese, Chinese and Korean chopsticks?

They are all different in shapes and sizes.
Japanese chopsticks are shorter than those from Korea and China. They are usually in lacquered wood, their top end is usually rounded or squared while the bottom is pointed.
Korean ones have a medium length, are flat and are usually in stainless steel.
Chinese version is longer and thicker than the two above, have a square shape with a rounded bottom and and are usually in wood or plastic.
