This traditional decoration is made up of two small bells tied together with a traditional cord knot. It is topped with a representation of the emblematic deities of Akita Prefecture, known as Namahage. Here, they appear as demon-like headsoni—one green and the other red, all attached to a small cord for hanging.

The Namahage is a typical figure from festivals in Akita Prefecture, similar to a “bogeyman,” especially during New Year celebrations in the city of Oga (Akita). During these festivities, a group of locals dressed as demons go door to door, asking families whether the children have behaved well over the past year. The goal is to scare children into behaving properly.

The bell cord also features an inscription about the protection offered by this amulet. It is said to bring happiness and a healthy life to its owner and their loved ones.
