These statuettes represent the Seven Lucky Gods from Japanese mythology. Originating from several different religions including Taoism and Buddhism, these deities began to be associated together from the 17th century onwards.

The Shichi Fukujin (in Japanese 七福神) are regularly offered and present at New Year celebrations. According to the legend, they come on their treasure-filled ship, the tarakabune, to bring good fortune to those who deserve it.

The deities are shown here, in order from left to right:

  • Ebisu: patron deity of merchants and fishermen, holding a fish,
  • Hotei: deity representing a monk with a rounded belly, synonymous with fortune and abundance,
  • Jurojin: deity of wisdom with a long white beard and headdress,
  • Benzaiten: deity of knowledge, art and beauty. She wears a biwa.
  • Daikokuten: deity of wealth and commerce.
  • Fukurokuju: deity of happiness, wealth and longevity, with a long white beard,
  • Bishamonten: deity of warriors, wearing an armor and a helmet.

This object is a good-luck charm ensuring good omens for all members of your family.
