This noren represents two carps going up a river (koi in Japanese). Because of its ability to go up rivers, it symbolizes strength and courage in Japanese culture. In legends, it's said that the koi carp who achieve going up the river entirely will transform in a dragon.
This noren is dyed in indigo or Aizome. This technique has been used since the 12th century in Japan and developed mainly from the Sengoku era or "era of the warring kingdoms". In fact, this dye in addition to being very beautiful contains antiseptic properties that were very useful to the warriors of that period.
