This beautiful Daruma cup is a "Sushi Yunomi" which is a cup we find in sushi restaurants to drink very hot green tea. The inscription is a Japanese proverb "Nanakorobi Yaoki" and means "7 times down, 8 times up". It refers to the symbols of perseverance and resilience of Daruma because those little figurines return to an upright position if they are knocked over like roly-poly dolls!
