Kabuki actors and high-ranking courtesans were the “stars” of the Edo period and had a huge influence on fashion over two centuries. Thus appeared the checkered pattern, Ichimatsu, which came from the pattern of the stone path used by the kabuki actor Sanokawa Ichimastu.
