This very original object is a toothpick keeper with a mechanical system to pick up the toothpick one by one. By pushing the lever the bird will pick up one of the toothpick with its beak then will come back to its initial position.
The name 'karakuri' refers to mechanized dolls created more than 500 years ago and mostly used during festivals. The word 'youji' means toothpick in Japanese, and 'tori' is a pun and means both  bird and pick-up.
